1월 17일, 1월 18일 이틀간 긴 시간을 들여 큐레이팅 스쿨 서울, 서울리딩룸 운영진 동료들과 ‘워크숍’을 했다. 하고 싶은 일, 할 수 있는 일을 일별하고, 이 일의 어떤 부분에서 보람과 행복을 느끼는지, 우리의 ‘미션 스테이트먼트’가 무엇이어야 할 지를 긴 시간에 걸쳐 논의하는 자리였다.
점점 더, 함께 무언가를 이뤄낸다는 것의 의미에 대해 생각을 많이 된다. 혼자서 할 수 있는 일은 실상 그렇게 많지 않다.
이틀간 도합 7-8시간 가량 함께 대화를 나누었던 가운데, 미술에 대해 인상 깊었던 한 마디는 이것이다. 예술 활동 혹은 미술 활동의 태도적인 측면에 관해 이야기하며, 미술을 ‘탐구의 방식’으로 여긴다는 것.
탐구 방식으로서의 미술이라는 생각은 창작자, 매개자, 향유자 모두에게 미술에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 틀을 넓혀준다. 그리고, 이런 생각을 함께 할 사람들이 있다는 건 여러모로 감사할 일이다.
On January 17th and 18th, I spent long hours in ‘workshops’ with my colleagues working together on the Curating School Seoul and Seoul Reading Room. We reviewed what we want to do and what we can do, discussing at length which aspects of our work bring us fulfillment and happiness, and what our ‘mission statement’ should be.
Increasingly, I find myself thinking about the meaning of achieving something ‘together.’ Indeed, there aren’t that many things one can accomplish alone.
During our approximately 7-8 hours of conversation over two days, one particularly memorable comment about art was: regarding the attitudinal aspect of artistic or visual art activities, we can view art as a ‘method of inquiry.’
The concept of art as a method of inquiry broadens the framework for thinking about art for creators, mediators, and appreciators alike. And it’s something to be grateful for in many ways that there are people with whom I can share these thoughts.
